The reason it died is OSRS gold because they let it die unless I am mistaken. Like with each game that Jagex has released, if it is not as successful as Runescape it drop. Chronicles published, was actually enjoyable and intriguing, but then as far as I can recall never got upgrades. It was published, it had a bit of success, they put those few chronicle things into RS, expected it to automatically take off to colossal heights of achievement that it didn't, stopped updating it and after awhile stopped supporting it.
It actually was an intriguing concept for a card game type of sport, but there's a reason games in general often have changes or are regarded as a classic. They have new cards with Hearthstone as well as new expansions at least as I do not know a lot about others,
